Finna by Nate Marshall is a collection of sharp, lyrical poems that celebrate the Black vernacular. These poems illuminate life in America, exploring the brevity and disposability of Black lives, the influence of the Black vernacular on pop culture, and its necessity for familial survival. Through Marshall’s words, we witness the rite of storytelling and the safety found only within the intimacy of the Black vernacular. The poems consider the impact of racial and gendered epithets, the erasure of peoples in the American narrative, and the power of language to expand notions of possibility.
