Once is a poignant children’s novel written by Australian author Morris Gleitzman. The story revolves around a young Jewish boy named Felix, who lives in Poland during World War II. Felix embarks on a quest to find his book-keeper parents after witnessing Nazis burning books from a Catholic orphanage where he had stayed for over three years.
Along the way, he encounters a girl named Zelda, and their journey becomes intertwined as they navigate the complexities of survival, friendship, and hope. Although a work of fiction, “Once” draws inspiration from the events of the Holocaust and the resilience of young people during that dark period.
