Michael Madhusudan Dutta Brief Biography

Michael Madhusudan Dutt or Michael Madhusudan Dutta is a Bengali language poet, writer, and dramatist born 25 January 1824. His birthplace was in Sāgardāri, Jashore District, Bengal Presidency, British India (presently under Bangladesh).

Michael Madhusudan Dutta is considered the pioneer of Bengali literature. The Meghnad Badh Kavya is one of his great works. It’s a tragic epic in Bengali literature. The linguistic ability of Michael Madhusudan Dutta was excellent; it seems like they got gifted.

He has good control in many languages such as Hebrew, Latin, Greek, Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit, Bangla, and English.

Early life And Education

The birthplace of Dutta was in Sagordari, a village in Keshabpur Upazila, Jessore District, when the Bengal was undivided presently; it is Bangladesh. His father’s name was Rajnarayan Dutt, a lawyer in the Sadar court.

His mother’s name was Jahnvi Devi. Michael Madhusudan Dutta was an extra-talented student, and he was acknowledged by his teacher and college professor for the literary expression.

He emulated the English in taste and manners when he started studying English Education and European literature; he was inspired by it here. Firstly Dutt was influenced by his teacher David Lester Richardson, the teacher at Hindu College, Calcutta.

He started writing English poems when he was 17 years old. After writing these poems, he sent those in England to publish. But none, however, was released.

Then he started communicating with his friend Gour Das Bysack through the latter. And it was the turning point of Dutt’s life. Madhusudan Dutta changes his religion to Christian on 9 February 1843. After becoming a Christian, he took the name Michael to his name. He went to London to become a Barrister-at-Law.

He also translated three plays from Bangla to English, including his own Sermista. The language knowledge of Michael Madhusudan Dutt was excellent. He gifted many excellent works to Bengali literature.

Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s Death

On 29 June 1873, this legend died in Calcutta General Hospital. Before three day’s of his death, he recited a passage to his friend from Shakespeare’s Macbeth to express his life’s most profound conviction: The passage is;

…out, out, brief candle!
Life’s but a walking shadow; a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more; it is a tale Told by an idiot,
full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.
