A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. is a post-apocalyptic social science fiction novel first published in 1959. The story unfolds in a Catholic monastery situated in the desert of the southwestern United States after a devastating nuclear war. The monks of the Albertian Order of Leibowitz play a crucial role—they preserve the surviving remnants of man’s scientific knowledge until the world is once again ready for it.
The book is a fix-up of three short stories that Miller initially published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. These stories were inspired by Miller’s experiences during World War II, particularly his participation in the bombing of the monastery at the Battle of Monte Cassino.
