Sharpe ingeniously captures the fortress and rescues Fox, and in retribution for the murder of several prisoners, executes the citadel’s commandant via guillotine. Upon his return, Sharpe is dismayed to find Major Charles Morris, who had previously flogged him in India, in command of his battalion.
After warning Morris against flogging any men during his absence, Sharpe, along with Fox, Harper, Charlie Weller, and a select group of men, is dispatched to Paris to investigate a suspected plot by a Bonapartist group, La Fraternité, to assassinate Wellington, Prince Blücher, Louis XVIII, and other allied leaders.
