Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a contemporary children’s novel that touches hearts and inspires hope. The story revolves around August “Auggie” Pullman, a 10-year-old boy living in North Riverside Heights, Lower Manhattan. Auggie was born with Treacher Collins syndrome, a condition that has disfigured his face and necessitated numerous surgeries and special care. After years of homeschooling, Auggie’s parents decide to enroll him in Beecher Prep, a private school, for fifth grade.
His older sister, Via, is also navigating her first year of high school. At school, Auggie faces both kindness and cruelty. He befriends Summer and Jack but also encounters bullying from classmates like Julian. The novel explores themes of prejudice, self-acceptance, and the power of friendship.
